In some books the TOC choices in Word are just not the right fit. When you find yourself in that situation here is how to create your own TOC.
Step ONE
Under Insert you will find Table. From there build the right size, number of cells and format for your book. That part is easy. The hard part is getting perfect perfectly spaced dots (technically called dot leaders) in a table. Once you have your table built you chose No Border to eliminate the lines. Now the tricky part to add a nice dot leader like below.

Step TWO
- Expand Paragraph and a box will open up, click on Tabs.
- In the box for Tab stop position type in 5.
- In the Alignment select right.
- In the Leader area, select the choice for dots.
- Select
Step THREE
- Place your cursor between a chapter name and the page number in your table of contents.
- To put a tab stop in a table cell, hold down the CTRL key while you press the TAB
- Repeat for each chapter.
