When you publish a print version of a book an ISBN is required. An ISBN is not required for Kindle, but is an option. An ASIN will automatically be assigned to a Kindle publication at not charge.
An ISBN, or International Standard Book Number, is a unique 10- or 13-digit number assigned to every published book. An ISBN identifies a title’s edition, publisher, and physical properties such as trim size, page count, and binding type. Bookstores, retailers, and libraries us the ISBN to identify books. An ISBN barcode will be printed on the lower back right corner of every book.
You have 3 options for ISBN options when you publish with Selah Press.
- You can use a CreateSpace-assigned ISBN for free. CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform will become your book’s imprint of record. CreateSpace-assigned ISBN are registered with BooksinPrint.com. A CreateSpace-assigned ISBN is required if you want to sell your book through the Libraries and Academic Institutions.
- You can get a Custom ISBN or Custom Universal ISBN under your own publishing house. To do so you must provide Selah Press with the ISBN number. You can purchase your own ISBN number through Bowker.
- You can use a Selah Press Custom ISBN for $150.00
Once you assign an ISBN number it cannot be changed.
When you publish in Kindle you can publish without an ISBN, however, it will only be used as a reference and won’t actually appear on the detail page of your eBook (only the ASIN will). You cannot use an ISBN from the print edition of your book for your Kindle edition. If you want an ISBN for the digital version of your book, it must be a unique ISBN.
